Main political parties and trade unions across the country are fully prepared for the May Day celebrations scheduled for tomorrow. This year, International Workers\u2019 Day coincides with the Vesak Poya Day, leading to a mix of plans and adjustments in the scheduled events.<\/p>\n
While some political parties and trade unions have decided to scale down their celebrations, others are proceeding with rallies and meetings as usual. Opposition parties, in particular, are expected to use the occasion to highlight alleged shortcomings and corruption within the government.<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that two major events will be held in the Northern Province, specifically in Jaffna and Vavuniya. In addition, a joint rally for the Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts will take place in Nuwara Eliya.<\/p>\n
He further noted that separate May Day events will be organized in other districts as well. Accordingly, the Colombo District event will be held in Maharagama, while the Gampaha District event will take place in Kadawatha.<\/p>\n
The main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, views this year\u2019s May Day as an opportunity to expose government failures and corruption. The party\u2019s National Organizer Tissa Attanayake stated that public dissatisfaction with the government has grown due to its perceived shortcomings.<\/p>\n
Under the theme \u201cPacha Madiwata Horu\u201d (lies and corruption), the party plans to hold a rally at P. D. Sirisena Grounds on May 1. Taking into account the Poya Day, only a meeting will be held without a procession, starting at 1:00 PM.<\/p>\n
The United National Party has decided to honor 250 workers of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) at its headquarters on May 1, 2026. Additionally, a biryani almsgiving is scheduled for April 30 with sponsorship support.<\/p>\n
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna maintains that May 1 should be observed as Vesak Day and considers political activities on that day inappropriate. However, it has planned its main event in Kelaniya.<\/p>\n
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is also preparing to hold its May Day event at Campbell Park despite internal party disputes.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Frontline Socialist Party will conduct its May Day rally at Hyde Park under the theme criticizing the government\u2019s alignment with external powers.<\/p>\n
In addition, according to May Day Committee Secretary Lal Steevan of the Samajwadi Janatha Peramuna, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Democratic Left Front, and the Mahajana Party will jointly celebrate May Day at the Communist Party headquarters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
