Six individuals, including Sri Lankan refugees, have been arrested while attempting to illegally travel by sea from Mandapam to Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
Following Sri Lanka\u2019s economic crisis, more than 300 Sri Lankan Tamils entered India illegally via Dhanushkodi since March 2022 and sought refuge in Tamil Nadu. They were subsequently accommodated at the Mandapam Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp.<\/p>\n
With the economic situation in Sri Lanka now relatively improving, several refugees in the camp had expressed their willingness to return home and submitted multiple requests to the Ramanathapuram District Collector and the Sri Lankan Consulate in Chennai.<\/p>\n
However, due to their illegal entry into India, legal complications have prevented their official repatriation.<\/p>\n
As a result, some individuals in the camp have resorted to attempting illegal return journeys to Sri Lanka by boat.<\/p>\n
In this context, three Sri Lankan Tamils found under suspicious circumstances in the southern coastal area of Mandapam were apprehended by the Q Branch Police yesterday evening (27).<\/p>\n
Investigations identified them as Jimsriv (48), his wife Rajini (47), and their daughter Thipenthini (20), all residents of Gurunagar, Jaffna. They admitted that they were waiting to leave for Sri Lanka by an illegal boat.<\/p>\n
Further inquiries led to the arrest of three more individuals from the Erumaitharavai area in Mandapam, who were allegedly assisting them with diesel and other supplies.<\/p>\n
A total of six suspects have been arrested. Mandapam Police have filed cases against them and produced them before court, after which they were remanded in custody.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
