Shareholders of Sri Lanka Telecom have announced plans to stage a large-scale protest on the 19th of this month, opposing what they describe as arbitrary decisions and alleged fraudulent activities by the company\u2019s current Board of Directors.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo on Wednesday (June 10), Trade Union leader G. Anura Perera of the Telecom Shareholders Association made the announcement.<\/p>\n
Perera stated that shareholders are strongly opposed to the decision to hold the company\u2019s Annual General Meeting online on the 19th, instead of the traditional physical format that has been followed for the past 35 years.<\/p>\n
He further noted that letters raising objections had already been sent to the President\u2019s Office, the Treasury, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. However, no official response has been received so far, he claimed.<\/p>\n
He also alleged that the current Board is attempting to appoint individuals over the age of 70, despite existing regulations that restrict such appointments.<\/p>\n
Perera further claimed that the company is not adhering to the rule requiring 30% of profits to be distributed among shareholders. Instead, he alleged that profit figures are being adjusted at the discretion of the management, creating what he described as a misleading picture of profitability based on foreign currency reserves.<\/p>\n
Highlighting concerns affecting over one million customers and employees, Perera urged the President to intervene immediately using executive authority.<\/p>\n
He also expressed disappointment, stating that political parties which previously supported public concerns are now in power, yet similar issues are continuing under their governance.<\/p>\n
Perera warned that if no action is taken, shareholders will proceed with a major protest against the current management of Sri Lanka Telecom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
