A meeting of the Food Policy and Security Committee was held yesterday (08) at the Presidential Secretariat under the joint leadership of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Lal Kantha and Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.<\/p>\n
The discussion focused on preparedness measures and response strategies in the event that Sri Lanka is affected by a possible global El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon in the future.<\/p>\n
Special attention was also given to the potential impact of El Ni\u00f1o on the agricultural sector. Officials discussed the importance of conserving water in reservoirs for the upcoming cultivation season and safeguarding drinking water supplies. Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe instructed relevant institutions to submit their recommendations and expert opinions on the matter.<\/p>\n
It was also decided to convene a special meeting of the Food Policy and Security Committee in the coming days to further discuss the issue. The Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture, Mahaweli Authority, Department of Irrigation, and other relevant agencies were instructed to prepare and present comprehensive plans on how to address potential El Ni\u00f1o-related challenges.<\/p>\n
The ministers noted that just as Sri Lanka successfully managed challenges arising from Cyclone Titli and conflicts in the Middle East, plans are already being developed to effectively address this global external challenge. They emphasized that the government is paying special attention to the issue.<\/p>\n
Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe further stated that natural disasters cannot always be predicted in advance and stressed the importance of having contingency plans in place to respond to any situation that may arise.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government S. Aloka Bandara, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Acting Director General of Meteorology A.L.K.
