Representatives of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on June 15 to conduct nationwide monitoring and assessment activities.<\/p>\n
Established in 2007, the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture consists of 25 independent experts whose primary mandate is to prevent torture in member states, provide guidance, and promote preventive measures.<\/p>\n
The delegation is expected to remain in Sri Lanka until June 24 and will engage in a series of meetings and field visits during their stay.<\/p>\n
As part of the visit, the representatives will hold discussions with officials of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission and other stakeholders. These discussions will focus on allegations of torture, measures taken to prevent such incidents, and the role played by law enforcement authorities, civil society organizations, and other relevant institutions in the prevention process.<\/p>\n
The delegation is also expected to conduct field visits to locations where there may be a risk of torture or ill-treatment, in order to assess conditions and evaluate existing safeguards.<\/p>\n
In addition, the UN representatives will hold private meetings with civil society groups and other relevant parties to gather information on human rights protection, torture prevention mechanisms, and challenges faced in their implementation.<\/p>\n
The visit is expected to contribute to strengthening international cooperation and monitoring efforts related to the protection of human rights and the prevention of torture in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
