{"id":2212,"date":"2026-06-05T13:08:48","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T13:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2026-06-05T13:08:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T13:08:48","slug":"52nd-anniversary-commemoration-of-martyr-pon-sivakumaran-held-in-urumpirai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/2026\/06\/05\/52nd-anniversary-commemoration-of-martyr-pon-sivakumaran-held-in-urumpirai\/","title":{"rendered":"52nd Anniversary Commemoration of Martyr Pon Sivakumaran Held in Urumpirai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 52nd anniversary of the martyrdom of <strong>Pon Sivakumaran<\/strong> was commemorated as an official remembrance event organized by the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha at the statue premises in Urumpirai.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony began at 8.00 a.m. on Friday (05) under the leadership of the Chairman of the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha, Thiyagaraja Nirosh.<\/p>\n<p>The main remembrance flame was lit by Sivakumaran\u2019s sister, Sivakumari, followed by the lighting of ceremonial lamps by dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes were paid in remembrance of Pon Sivakumaran and other fighters who sacrificed their lives for the cause of liberation, followed by a moment of silence.<\/p>\n<p>Following the silent tribute, wreaths were laid at the statue by several participants, including former Member of Parliament Selvarajah Kajendran, political analyst C.A. Yothilingam, attorneys Kandipan and Manivannan, former Provincial Council member Kajadeepan, representatives of the Pradeshiya Sabha, and former combatants.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha also paid floral tributes at the restored statue of Pon Sivakumaran, which had previously been destroyed during past military operations and later reinstalled.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman delivered the pledge of remembrance, stating that the Pradeshiya Sabha considers it a great honor to commemorate Pon Sivakumaran as a local authority.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers highlighted Sivakumaran\u2019s sacrifice, his role in the early phase of Tamil youth awakening, and his significance in the Tamil national liberation movement.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes were also delivered by several individuals including legal professionals, former administrators, political activists, and representatives of civil society organizations advocating for political prisoners, fisheries rights, and land release.
