The Police Media Division has firmly stated that social media reports claiming that the police have imposed a ban on singing songs at music concerts and entertainment events in Sri Lanka are completely false and misleading.<\/p>\n
Authorities clarified that no such nationwide restriction has been imposed on music performances or entertainment events.<\/p>\n
However, investigations have been initiated by the Jaffna Regional Criminal Investigation Division regarding a musical event held on 31 May in the Navatkuli area of Chavakachcheri, where songs allegedly promoting the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were performed and related videos were circulated on social media.<\/p>\n
Following these investigations, a 24-year-old youth from Udayanagar, Kilinochchi, was arrested on 2 June. Further inquiries revealed that the suspect had edited two songs performed at the event and uploaded them on his social media platforms in a manner that glorified and promoted the LTTE.<\/p>\n
Investigators have confirmed that the suspect intentionally disseminated content supportive of a banned organization for public viewing.<\/p>\n
The act falls under Section 3(g) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act No. 48 of 1978 and the suspect was produced before the Chavakachcheri Magistrate\u2019s Court on 3 June and remanded until 17 June.<\/p>\n
Police emphasized that certain social media posts have falsely linked this incident to a supposed nationwide ban on singing at music events.<\/p>\n
