The Vesak Zone organized by the Sri Lanka Army in the surroundings of Nagavihara in Jaffna was ceremonially opened to the public on Vesak Day, May 30, 2026.<\/p>\n
The event commenced with distinguished guests illuminating the decorative Vesak lanterns and light displays, officially inaugurating the Vesak Zone.<\/p>\n
Following the opening ceremony, the Dansala (free food distribution programme) arranged at the venue was also formally launched by the invited guests.<\/p>\n
The special event held at Nagavihara was attended by the Chief Incumbent of Nagavihara, Venerable Meehaha Jandure Sri Wimala Thero, along with other religious leaders. Also present were Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan, Consul General of India in Jaffna Sai Murali, Jaffna District Secretary Maruthalingam Pradeepan, Kilinochchi District Secretary Subramaniam Muralitharan, and several senior government officials.<\/p>\n
Among the other attendees were Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General K.J.N.M.P.K. Priyantha Navaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Northern Province Buddhika Siriwardena, the Northern Naval Area Commander, the Commanding Officer of the Palaly Air Force Base, the Jaffna Divisional Secretary, the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Jaffna District.<\/p>\n
During the event, awards were presented to the Army units that secured the top three positions in the Vesak decoration competition in recognition of their outstanding designs and creativity.<\/p>\n
