{"id":2000,"date":"2026-05-31T08:12:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T08:12:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/?p=2000"},"modified":"2026-05-31T08:12:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T08:12:23","slug":"sri-lanka-to-receive-five-advanced-mammography-machines-worth-rs-765-million-to-strengthen-breast-cancer-detection-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/2026\/05\/31\/sri-lanka-to-receive-five-advanced-mammography-machines-worth-rs-765-million-to-strengthen-breast-cancer-detection-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka to Receive Five Advanced Mammography Machines Worth Rs. 765 Million to Strengthen Breast Cancer Detection Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To reduce long waiting lists and improve the early detection and post-treatment management of breast cancer, Sri Lanka&#8217;s public hospital system is set to receive five state-of-the-art mammography machines valued at a total of Rs. 765 million.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative has been implemented under the guidance of Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, with the objective of enhancing healthcare infrastructure and delivering more efficient medical services to the public.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media has arranged for five advanced mammography machines to be distributed to key hospitals that provide diagnosis and treatment services for breast cancer and other abnormal breast conditions, which are among the most common cancers affecting women.<\/p>\n<p>The new machines will be installed at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo<\/li>\n<li>National Hospital, Karapitiya, Galle<\/li>\n<li>National Hospital, Kandy<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura<\/li>\n<li>Apeksha Hospital (National Cancer Institute)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each mammography machine is valued at approximately Rs. 153 million, bringing the total investment to Rs. 765 million.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the project has been provided through the Health System Enhancement Project (HSEP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this initiative, the Ministry has also taken steps to provide two refurbished mammography machines to the General Hospitals in Trincomalee and Nuwara Eliya to address urgent service requirements in those districts.<\/p>\n<p>At present, 16 mammography machines are operational across Sri Lanka. With the addition of the five new machines and two refurbished units, the country&#8217;s mammography capacity will increase significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals currently equipped with mammography facilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Hospital, Karapitiya<\/li>\n<li>National Hospital, Colombo<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Ragama<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Hospital, Jaffna<\/li>\n<li>Polonnaruwa General Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Kurunegala General Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Badulla Teaching Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Ratnapura Teaching Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Kalmunai Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Trincomalee District General Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently, patients seeking mammography examinations at government hospitals often face long waiting periods, ranging from several weeks to several months.<\/p>\n<p>Although healthcare guidelines recommend that all required diagnostic tests be completed within a few days of patient registration, delays frequently occur due to high patient demand and limited equipment availability.<\/p>\n<p>Health authorities expect that integrating these modern mammography systems into the national healthcare network will significantly reduce waiting times, improve early breast cancer detection, and provide faster and more effective healthcare services to the public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To reduce long waiting lists and improve the early detection and post-treatment management of breast cancer, Sri Lanka&#8217;s public hospital system is set to receive five state-of-the-art mammography machines valued at a total of Rs. 765 million.
