{"id":1762,"date":"2026-05-24T19:34:59","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/?p=1762"},"modified":"2026-05-24T19:34:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:34:59","slug":"health-ministry-to-expand-early-detection-of-cervical-cancer-with-advanced-equipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/2026\/05\/24\/health-ministry-to-expand-early-detection-of-cervical-cancer-with-advanced-equipment\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Ministry to Expand Early Detection of Cervical Cancer with Advanced Equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health has taken steps to integrate 18 advanced colposcopy machines into the hospital system at a cost of Rs. 114 million, aimed at the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, one of the cancers affecting women.<\/p>\n<p>With this initiative, the total number of such machines in the country will increase from 15 to 33, according to the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve machines, each valued at around Rs. 6 million, have already been installed in hospitals including Jaffna, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Gampaha.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining six machines, costing Rs. 42 million, are expected to be installed by June in major teaching and district general hospitals such as Vavuniya, Ampara, Ragama, and Kalutara. In addition, five older machines currently in use will be decommissioned and replaced with new ones.<\/p>\n<p>These advanced devices assist specialist gynecologists in identifying abnormal cells or lesions in the cervix and vaginal area at an early stage.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the National Cancer Control Programme, approximately 1,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually in Sri Lanka, while around 180 deaths occur each year due to lack of proper treatment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health has taken steps to integrate 18 advanced colposcopy machines into the hospital system at a cost of Rs. 114 million, aimed at the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, one of the cancers affecting women.
