A decision has been taken in Mullaitivu District to give priority to local councils in the extraction and distribution of mineral resources such as sand and gravel, with the aim of regulating availability and maintaining fair market prices.<\/p>\n
The decision was reached during the Environmental Sub-Committee meeting held last Wednesday (20) at the Bandaravanniyan Conference Hall of the District Secretariat under the chairmanship of District Secretary A. Umamaheswaran.<\/p>\n
The primary objective of the decision is to ensure a continuous supply of sand and gravel at reasonable prices for public needs and development projects in the district.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, Puthukudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha has already submitted an application for sand extraction, and based on preliminary field inspections, recommendations have been made to issue the required permit.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Karaithuraipattu Pradeshiya Sabha, Manthai East Pradeshiya Sabha, and Thunukkai Pradeshiya Sabha are also in the process of submitting applications for sand and gravel extraction activities.<\/p>\n
In addition, all private sand mining activities within the Puthukudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat Division have been completely banned.<\/p>\n
The committee also decided to implement a project through local councils to wash and utilize river sand found in areas identified by the Department of Irrigation.<\/p>\n
Discussions were also held on strengthening monitoring mechanisms and controlling illegal sand mining activities, with several additional decisions taken during the meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
