The Northern Province is expected to record a paddy harvest of 174,000 metric tonnes during the 2026 Yala cultivation season, marking the highest harvest ever anticipated for a Yala season in the province, according to S. Sivasri.<\/p>\n
Speaking based on the projected targets released by the Provincial Agriculture Ministry, he stated that paddy cultivation is planned across a total extent of 39,215 hectares throughout the province this season.<\/p>\n
The overall provincial yield is estimated at 4.4 metric tonnes per hectare. He further noted that the rehabilitation of irrigation tanks by the Northern Province Irrigation Department through provincial allocated funds and various financial sources has significantly contributed to achieving this high production target.<\/p>\n
Among the districts, Mullaitivu is expected to record the highest cultivation extent, with paddy farming planned on 13,805 hectares. Based on an estimated yield of 4.5 metric tonnes per hectare, the district is expected to produce 62,123 metric tonnes of paddy.<\/p>\n
This is followed by Kilinochchi, where paddy cultivation will take place on 12,523 hectares, with an expected harvest of 56,354 metric tonnes.<\/p>\n
In Vavuniya, cultivation is planned on 8,601 hectares, with an anticipated yield of 34,404 metric tonnes.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mannar is expected to achieve the highest productivity rate in the province, estimated at 5.0 metric tonnes per hectare. Paddy cultivation there will cover 4,286 hectares, with an expected production of 21,430 metric tonnes.<\/p>\n
