{"id":1545,"date":"2026-05-20T07:16:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T07:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/?p=1545"},"modified":"2026-05-20T07:16:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T07:16:28","slug":"annual-maintenance-cost-of-sri-lankas-expressways-exceeds-rs-5-1-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tamilmail.lk\/english\/2026\/05\/20\/annual-maintenance-cost-of-sri-lankas-expressways-exceeds-rs-5-1-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Maintenance Cost of Sri Lanka\u2019s Expressways Exceeds Rs. 5.1 Billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Minister of Transport, Highways and Media Development Bimal Rathnayake stated that the annual maintenance cost for Sri Lanka\u2019s entire expressway network, which spans 312.57 kilometres, amounts to Rs. 5,180.90 million.<\/h2>\n<p>The Minister made this statement in Parliament today (20) while responding to a question raised by Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake.<\/p>\n<p>During his response, Minister Rathnayake presented detailed figures regarding the maintenance expenses of each expressway operating in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister, the annual maintenance costs for the expressways are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>E1 Southern Expressway<\/strong> (Kottawa to Mattala \u2013 200.45 km): Rs. 2,024.5 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>E2 Outer Circular Expressway<\/strong> (Kottawa to Kerawalapitiya \u2013 28.86 km): Rs. 767.6 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>E3 Colombo\u2013Katunayake Expressway<\/strong> (Peliyagoda to Seeduwa \u2013 25.8 km): Rs. 834.1 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>E4 Central Expressway<\/strong> (Meerigama to Kurunegala, Yakkapitiya \u2013 40.91 km): Rs. 531.00 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>E5 Southern Expressway Extension<\/strong> (Andarawewa to Hambantota \u2013 16.55 km): Rs. 1,022.70 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Minister emphasized that the total maintenance expenditure for the country\u2019s expressway system stands at Rs. 5,180.90 million annually.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Minister Rathnayake also revealed that the total income generated from all expressways from the beginning of 2025 until December 31, 2025, amounted to Rs. 16,330.14 million.<\/p>\n<p>The revenue generated from each expressway was reported as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Southern Expressway<\/strong>: Rs. 5,031.28 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outer Circular Expressway<\/strong>: Rs. 4,347.32 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colombo\u2013Katunayake Expressway<\/strong>: Rs. 3,355.12 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>Southern Expressway Extension<\/strong>: Rs. 2,019.45 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>Central Expressway<\/strong>: Rs. 1,576.97 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minister Bimal Rathnayake stated that these figures demonstrate the significant contribution made by expressways to the country\u2019s transport sector revenue, while also highlighting the substantial costs required for their maintenance and operation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of Transport, Highways and Media Development Bimal Rathnayake stated that the annual maintenance cost for Sri Lanka\u2019s entire expressway network, which spans 312.57 kilometres, amounts to Rs. 5,180.90 million.
