Jaffna District Fisheries Cooperative Federation representative Sellathurai Narkunam stated that the promise made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay regarding the retrieval of Katchatheevu should remain merely an election-time promise. Otherwise, they would not hesitate to protest against him.<\/p>\n
He made these remarks during a media briefing held on Tuesday (19) at the Fisheries Cooperative Society in Jaffna.<\/p>\n
He further stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cOn behalf of the fishermen of Jaffna District, we extend our gratitude to Joseph Vijay on assuming office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. At the same time, we would like to place several requests before him.<\/p>\n
Katchatheevu belongs to Sri Lanka. The people of India, especially the fishing community in Tamil Nadu, are well aware that Sri Lanka rightfully obtained ownership of the island.<\/p>\n
Despite this, during your election campaign, you stated that India should reclaim Katchatheevu.<\/p>\n
We did not consider it a serious matter because it has become common for candidates in Tamil Nadu elections to make such statements in order to gain the votes of fishermen.<\/p>\n
Now that you have been elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, we do not wish to hear false statements regarding Katchatheevu anymore.<\/p>\n
If you attempt to take up the Katchatheevu issue again, the Jaffna fishing community will strongly oppose it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Jaffna District Fisheries Cooperative Federation Chairman Anthonipillai Mariyadas also addressed the media briefing.<\/p>\n
He congratulated Joseph Vijay on becoming the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and stated that the fishermen\u2019s association wished to make several requests to him.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that Sri Lankan fishermen in the Northern Province continue to be affected by Indian fishermen crossing the maritime boundary from Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n
He further stated that Indian fishermen not only damage marine resources but have also destroyed fishing nets worth millions of rupees belonging to Sri Lankan fishermen.<\/p>\n
He added that the fishing ban period is expected to end on the 15th and urged authorities to take steps to control Indian fishermen who illegally enter Sri Lankan waters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
