Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya<\/span><\/span> has instructed authorities to expedite compensation payments and reconstruction work for those affected by the Tidwa<\/em> cyclone, with special attention at the district level.<\/p>\n

She made these remarks during a discussion held at Temple Trees<\/span><\/span> with district coordination committee heads and public representatives, aimed at accelerating the \u201cRebuilding Sri Lanka\u201d<\/em> programme.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to speed up disaster relief and compensation processes, while ensuring rapid restoration of damaged infrastructure. She noted that funds have already been allocated to Provincial Councils and urged officials to closely monitor progress at the provincial level.<\/p>\n

It was revealed that Rs. 500 billion has been allocated for recovery efforts, with all development and reconstruction activities expected to be completed before the end of 2026. Authorities were also advised to address delays in compensation distribution at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

Senior Additional Secretary to the President, G.M.R.D. Aponsu, stated that an estimated USD 3.4 billion is required for full recovery efforts. Compensation has been allocated across multiple sectors including housing, social infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, irrigation, and livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Key updates include:<\/p>\n

  • 99% completion of Rs. 25,000 relief payments<\/li>\n
  • 95% completion of Rs. 50,000 resettlement allowances<\/li>\n
  • Ongoing compensation for fully and partially damaged houses<\/li>\n
  • 99% completion of closing temporary \u2018Suraksha\u2019 relief centres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Additional measures include financial support for affected students, Rs. 1 million compensation for families of deceased victims, assistance for orphaned children, support for persons with special needs, and compensation for damaged agricultural activities.<\/p>\n
