A train derailment near the Wanawasala railway station has caused an estimated loss of nearly Rs. 20 million to the Railway Department, according to Railway Station Masters\u2019 Union Secretary Kasun Chamara.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the media regarding the incident, he stated that the accident cannot be treated as a minor issue and rejected claims that such derailments occur solely due to the long-term lack of railway track maintenance.<\/p>\n
He further explained that certain individuals addicted to narcotics have made it a practice to steal metal bolts and nails fixed to railway tracks in order to sell them for money.<\/p>\n
According to him, similar incidents of theft had previously been reported near the Kelani railway bridge as well. As a result, the Railway Department has now deployed a security guard in that area.<\/p>\n
Kasun Chamara stressed that removing bolts and nails from railway tracks can lead to extremely dangerous consequences and major accidents. He urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activities involving railway tracks either to the nearest police station or railway station.<\/p>\n
