Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One while returning after completing a three-day official visit to China, Trump said that a decision on the matter would be made soon.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the Taiwan issue was one of the key topics discussed during bilateral talks between Trump and Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n
During the discussions, Xi Jinping reportedly warned Trump directly that if the United States mishandles the Taiwan issue, it could trigger conflict between the two sides.<\/p>\n
Speaking further on the matter, Trump stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cXi Jinping told me that China strongly opposes Taiwan becoming an independent country. I listened to his views, but I did not respond.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Trump also revealed that Xi had questioned whether the United States would defend Taiwan if China launched an attack.<\/p>\n
However, Trump said he deliberately avoided answering the question.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly I know the answer to that question. I do not want to discuss it publicly,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
