The Department of Irrigation has announced that water levels in several major rivers, which had risen due to heavy rainfall, are now gradually decreasing following reduced rainfall over the past 24 hours.<\/p>\n
Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Department of Irrigation, L.S. Sooriyabandara, stated that water levels in rivers including the Nilwala River, Gin River, Kalu River, and Attanagalu Oya are currently receding.<\/p>\n
He noted that except for the Millakanda area of the Kalu Ganga, water levels in other locations have decreased. Although the reduction is due to lower rainfall, he warned that it may only be temporary, as the Department of Meteorology has forecast further rain in the coming days.<\/p>\n
At present, 18 major reservoirs out of 73 and 18 medium-scale reservoirs are spilling.<\/p>\n
However, he assured the public that the current water release is not expected to create a major flood risk and advised people to remain alert and monitor the situation carefully.<\/p>\n
