5,000 Bharatanatyam Dancers Set Guinness World Record at “Sangamam 2026”

A historic Guinness World Record was set today (14 June) at Galle Face Green, Colombo, when 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers performed together under the theme “Sangamam 2026,” creating a synchronized rhythm with 10,000 ankle bells (salangai).
The event was organized by Sangamam Global Academy and Sangamam Lia Holidays following a request made by Deputy Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Development, Sundaralingam Pradeep, at a Tamil diaspora conference held in India. The programme was conducted under his guidance and support.
The spectacular cultural event transformed Galle Face Green into a symbol of Tamil cultural pride. The synchronized performance showcased the beauty, discipline, and unity of Bharatanatyam to a global audience.
Deputy Minister Pradeep, who attended as the chief guest, congratulated the performers and stated that the achievement was a proud moment for all Sri Lankans, highlighting Tamil artistic heritage on the world stage.
Thousands of spectators, art enthusiasts, and foreign visitors gathered to witness the event. The sound of the dancers’ ankle bells echoed across the seafront, creating a memorable cultural spectacle.
The achievement was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records organization, and a certificate confirming the world record was presented to the Deputy Minister during the ceremony.
Parents and students who participated expressed their gratitude for making such an event possible in Sri Lanka and called for greater support and recognition of cultural programmes in the future.
Among the distinguished guests were Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, Deputy Minister of Industries Mahinda Jayasinghe, and several other dignitaries.
