Capacity-Building Programs in Eastern Province to Strengthen Women’s Political Participation

Activities aimed at increasing women’s participation in politics and building networks among civil society organizations working on women’s issues are being implemented in the Eastern Province by Search for Common Ground (SFCG).
The initiative is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). As the first phase of the project, several capacity-building programs have already been conducted in the past, including training sessions for women engaged in politics and workshops for civil society representatives.
Based on the feedback and proposals received from these initial activities, the second phase of the project is currently underway. In this phase, action plans submitted by organizations working on women’s development have been selected and are being implemented through the chosen partners.
As part of this continuation, the Women’s Development Organization conducted a training program on “Leadership and Communication” for female representatives of local government institutions in the Ampara District on 13 May.
The session was facilitated by Attorney Chandralingam Chandrakumar, who provided training on developing leadership skills and how communication influences the effectiveness of representatives in their roles. A total of 20 local government representatives participated in the program.
During group activities, participants also discussed challenges faced in promoting female leadership within local authorities and gaps in communication processes within their institutions.
